If you're a DIY enthusiast or just someone who is looking to makeover an old piece of furniture, you've probably faced the challenge of finding the perfect primer.
Let's start with things you likely don't want in a primer:
Fumes, and lingering stinkiness arising from high VOC, often caustic primers.
Gluggy consistency which leaves distintive brush marks, and often a pebbly appearance which needs to be sanded between coats.
Primers that need chemical clean up, like turpentine.
Primers that can't be mixed in with your water based furniture paint, or change the colour and consistency of your paint.
So, if you're seeking a prep agent that doesn't fit into ANY of the above points, look no further – Vintage Bird Furniture Paint's Birds Special Bond (BSB) can revolutionize your painting game.
Let's dive into the secrets of this magical mix and discover what makes it a must-have for many of your furniture makeovers and other DIY projects.
Picture this – you've got a vintage chair that's seen better days, or a pine bedside table begging for a fresh look. Enter Birds Special Bond, your new painting sidekick. This magical solution is not just a primer – it's a bonding agent that ensures your paint adheres like a long-lost friend, creating a lasting relationship between your furniture and the vibrant color you've chosen.
It's an excellent choice for shiny, glossy ,or other very smooth surfaces. We always recommend that you still scuff sand your surface thoroughly (and give it a very good clean of course), but applying one or two coats of BSB will provide you with an excellent surface to now apply your paint coats.
There are 3 main ways we use/apply our BSB...
The bond works wonders when applied directly to the surface, creating a foundation that will make your paint job stand the test of time. After cleaning and scuff sanding your surface with medium grit sandpaper, apply a thin coat of BSB after shaking the bottle very well and giving it a stir. You'll notice it's a thinner consistency than paint, more like milk, and will look white when poured. Apply thinly to avoid drips, or if you see any, wipe them over gently with a baby wipe of similar whilst still damp. You can apply a second coat if desired after the 1st coat is dry (usually around 45 minutes).
Simply mix it with your chosen paint, at a ratio of approximately 1/3 BSB to 2/3 paint and mix thoroughly. Apply over your cleaned/sanded surface. You only need to do this for your first coat, though if you have any of your paint/BSB mix left over, just add some more paint and use on your second coat.
Apply over dry paint or other surfaces such as decoupage, transfers, stencilled areas etc...
Apply in the same manner in 1. above. A maximum of 2 thin coats should be used to avoid the dried surface looking semi-translucent.
One of the best things about Birds Special Bond is its versatility. It plays well with all kinds of water based paint – chalk paint, clay/mineral paint, latex paint, acrylic paint, milk paint – you name it.
So, whether you're into the matte finish of chalk paint or the durability of acrylic, this bond will work for you.
BSB is a game changer when using Milk Paint, which doesn't have the adhesive qualities of modern, acrylic based paints. If you're using Milk Paint on an already finished or pre-painted surface, we recommend a coat of BSB to prime, and then add it into your paint in the ratio list above for the first coat.
Now, you might be wondering, "What sets Birds Special Bond apart from regular primers?"
The answer lies in its special formulation. Unlike traditional primers that can alter the color of your paint, BSB remains discreet, allowing your chosen hue to shine through without any interference. Say goodbye to unexpected color changes and hello to the true vibrancy of your paint!
When using it as a sealer, apply in a thin coat, and allow to dry. If you apply too many coats, it may start to look milky when dry. Two thin coats is enough to seal most surfaces.
Birds Special Bond allows you to get creative with your up-cycling and crafting. You aren't just restricted to painting timber. BSB will work as a primer on cleaned surfaces such as glass, mirrors, laminate, melamine, tin, zinculume, terracotta, concrete and more.
Just ensure your surfaces are thoroughly cleaned of any grease, grime and debris. If you're applying over timber, metal, or melamine/laminate, we recommend still scuff sanding well with a medium grit paper - like a 180grit.
When painting gloss or very smooth surfaces like glass, make sure it's squeaky clean and dry first.
Apply 2 coats, waiting for it to dry thoroughly in between coats.
Let's sum up why Birds Special Bond deserves a spot in your DIY arsenal:
