Black is a perennial favourite amongst designers, but can be a shade that many of us are shy about using in our own decor at home.
Just like Dior's little black dress, a touch of black in your home can add a classic look that is both elegant and timeless.
Our own black Furniture Paint, 'Black Cat' always sits in our top 3 best selling colours, and for good reason! It's an incredibly versatile shade that can lift a room from ordinary to amazing with a few strokes of a paint brush!
Here's our top tips for where to splash some black paint around in your home.
Have a small room, or corner of a room that you need to make look larger?
Ignore what you've heard about using a dark shade in a small space - shades such as black and charcoal can make small areas seem larger. You just need to think about scale.
This small bedroom has been given a blank canvas of white, with lots of natural light. This lets the black bedframe and bed table be the stars of the show. You don't notice the size - the room is stylish, yet simple and the furniture and colours perfect for it's size.

Painting trim in black rather than the whole piece can add interest to an otherwise bland piece of furniture.
Check out this bookshelf - elevated from plain timber with the outer trim painted in black.
Black also makes wood grains pop, and details come to life.
Here, the beautiful grain of the timber is highlighted, and complimented by the black trim paint.

Paint chairs in black that will be placed around a timber or light coloured table. They add a level of interest, and turn the dining setting into a real focal point. Painting mismatched chairs in black will also tie the varied styles together, making them all look perfectly at home together.
This technique is great for a collection of different styled vintage chairs, or if you have chairs that are nearly the same, but not quite - a coat of black paint will make the viewers eye run over the surfaces, rather than picking up on slightly different timber tones, different sized chair rungs, etc...

Use different types of prints/photographs,drawings etc… and unify them to create an eclectic collection by painting the frames in black. Frames don't need to be the same - different styles will add even more interest. Check out gallery wall configurations on Pinterest for ideas of how to hang frames.
Voila! Instant art wall.

Paint timber lamp bases black to give them a contemporary, or classic feel, depending on the fabric/material you choose for the shade.
A black base means you can use the lamp anywhere in your home - it will look amazing regardless where it's positioned.
This is a vintage floor lamp I painted with for a friend in Black Cat and you can see how it creates a much better presence with the gorgeous Indigenous Art inspired shade than it would with the lamp base being the same colour as the timber flooring.
Why We Love Painting With Black Cat.
All of our Vintage Bird Furniture Paints are designed to be self levelling, but Black Cat just seems to be extra smooth!
It glides on, and when you paint in light coats, it will dry to a silky finish.
It's also quick drying, so in many cases, you can start and finish your project in the same day!
Silky smooth and a true black! ✰✰✰✰✰
"Loved this paint! Left a beautifully smooth finish and is a true black."
